The team

  • The insight & evaluation team is integral to the data, research and content the Energy Saving Trust produces.  The work the team does is hugely varied from calculating the savings that can be achieved through making energy efficiency changes, to modelling the impact of new technologies to providing content for energy efficiency training to researching consumers attitudes towards government policy and assessing the impact that programmes deliver.
  • The team work individually on projects but also work closely together sharing ideas and working through complex problems or scenarios ensuring that knowledge sharing, and knowledge development is at the forefront of everything we do.
  • Working within the team and at the Energy Saving Trust more broadly will allow you to use your experience and skills, whilst improving your knowledge and having the space and opportunity to grow within a friendly, supportive team.

The role  

The senior consultant role sits within Energy Saving Trust’s Insight and Evaluation team, reporting into the Senior Manager – Insight & Evaluation. In this role you have the opportunity to provide evidence to inform policy recommendations in line with our mission to address the climate emergency. You will have a chance to work with a team with more than 20+ years of experience of research and evaluation. With an expanding area of work, this is an opportunity to join a fast-paced team working on new and existing evaluation and research projects

What you’ll do  

As a research expert, with experience of market research and evaluation techniques, you will manage evaluation projects to deliver evidence to identify and quantify emission savings and recommendations for programme improvements. You will develop and implement work plans to evaluate programmes that Energy Saving Trust delivers on behalf of our commercial and government clients. You will also contribute to business development proposals. 

Your ability to plan and prioritise work is essential in this busy environment, along with demonstrated effective communication skills enabling you to deliver a high standard of customer service to people at different levels. Your experience of evaluation and research techniques will underpin the successful delivery of this role.

What you’ll bring  

  • Experience of evaluation and research techniques with demonstrable experience of applying this in a commercial environment.
  • An ability to process data into meaningful insights coupled with strong interpersonal and communication skills will enable you to work with clients, positively influence as well as inform in order to deliver the insight required.
  • An ability to manage clients effectively with demonstrable experience of working with external and internal clients and managing multiple clients at once.

This is a permanent position. Our standard weekly hours are 37.5 hours, Monday to Friday. There is potential for this role to be part-time.

We are open to flexible working locations (within the UK) and as standard we offer all contracts on blended (home and office-based) working.

Job Purpose

To develop and manage the Energy Saving Trust’s evaluation activities in the field of sustainable energy relating to energy efficiency, renewable energy and transport activities to enable informed decision making by the organisation based on independent evidence of the impact of programmes and activities, identifying emission savings and recommendations for programme improvement.

Key responsibilities  

Technical project delivery

  • Develop and implement a work plan for the evaluation of Energy Saving Trust delivered programmes and as part of evaluation services we provide to public and private sector clients. The work involves assessing the impact of sustainable energy activities ranging from infrastructure/ capacity building to promotional campaigns. This includes understanding impact in terms of market transformation.
  • Provide technical expertise to the team on market research and evaluation methodologies including sample design, weighting and analytical techniques; and take overall responsibility for project delivery ensuring quality outputs for external and internal clients

Knowledge sharing and collaboration

  • Drive collaboration with business development and other teams to maximise opportunities for mission-relevant work. This includes providing detailed technical input to Energy Saving Trust activities as required, including policy work, media work, advice development, strategy development and networking

People management

  • Provide leadership to the team, driving development of the team resource to ensure effective team performance and supporting the junior team members in their roles
  • Providing effective line management, demonstrating corporate values and applying coaching to support and develop direct reports

Business development support

  • Support business development team to identify and develop evaluation and impact assessment opportunities as well as actively input into business proposals and tenders.
  • Build effective and collaborative relationships with key clients in government and the wider public and private sector, potential partners, and across Energy Saving Trust internal team

Personal development

  • Maintain and develop excellent knowledge of emerging developments in evaluation and impact assessment sector relevant to Energy Saving Trust work and mission

Knowledge, skills and qualifications required

Essential:  

  • At least seven years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrable experience of working within evaluation/research
  • Project management skills – experience of managing multiple projects for internal or external clients
  • Knowledge and experience of using evaluation and research techniques at a high calibre, including logic models, various types of sampling, data collection, a bank of analytical techniques, statistical tests, and other research tools.
  • Experience of designing appropriate evaluation or research methodologies which cover various types of quantitative and qualitative data
  • A track record of dealing with large and complex databases spanning many tables using sophisticated data management and process automation tools such as SQL.
  • Analytical and numerical skills including use of Excel and R or SPSS as well as business intelligence software for visual data analysis and presentation (e.g. Power BI)
  • Excellent verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good presentation skills
  • Demonstrable assertive and dynamic personality
  • Self-reliant and self-motivated
  • Ability to act with integrity and to display professional standards at all times
  • Proven ability to deliver to timescales
  • A willingness to learn about, engage with and support our efforts to become a more diverse, inclusive and equitable organisation

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Government policy and an understanding around sustainable energy and the green economy
  • Experience of calculating carbon and financial savings from activities.
  • Degree qualified in a subject with relevant analytical or subject matter knowledge
  • Ability to lead and inspire a team to work together effectively to produce outstanding results
