The American Meteorological Society (AMS) Policy Program seeks team members to help the nation and the world deal with issues in weather, water, and climate.

The AMS Policy Program promotes informed and thoughtful decision-making through analysis, communication, innovative problem solving, collaboration, and research. We help policy-makers and scientists understand one another and work together more effectively.

The AMS Policy Program uses three primary approaches. We:

  • build capacity for societal engagement within the weather, water, and climate enterprise;
  • inform the broader society about weather, water, and climate opportunities and challenges; and
  • advance knowledge and understanding at the interface of science and policy, particularly related to critical societal issues.

Position Overview:

The successful applicant will be part of a dedicated team in which each member contributes to a wide range of activities, plays both supporting and leading roles, and helps innovate new initiatives.

The new team member will:

  • contribute to ongoing policy studies, including those seeking: to provide actionable information for addressing climate change; to promote inclusion, equity, and justice; and to enhance the societal benefits of science;
  • lead in specific areas of interest;
  • explore and develop potential areas of focus; and
  • initiate new Program activities.

Bachelor's, Master’s, or Doctoral degree, or the equivalent combination of education, experience, and training, in the humanities, liberal arts, social sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences, and engineering. The title will reflect education and experience accordingly. New team members should possess:

  • excellent writing ability;
  • enthusiasm for collaboration and teamwork;
  • strong interpersonal skills;
  • aptitude for problem solving;
  • capacity for analysis, research, and synthesis of information.

Our intent is to fit the position to the unique interests and abilities of the person based on their potential to contribute to the AMS Policy Program.

This is a full-time position and salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Alternative arrangements, including IPA, sabbatical, visiting, and postdoctoral appointments are possible, based on the needs and interests of the applicant and Program. We offer a comprehensive benefits package including generous health, dental, and vision coverage, paid vacation, sick time, and holidays, and a superior retirement plan. The Policy Program is based in our Washington D.C. office, which has reopened. This position may be on-site, hybrid, or remote based on the interests and needs of the applicant and the Program. Candidates must be eligible for employment in the United States.

How to Apply:

AMS intakes applications through its ADP portal. We require a resume;  a brief writing sample (no more than 1-2 pages) that has been minimally edited by others, and a cover letter that outlines your interests in policy, societal engagement, and this position.

AMS Statement to Applicants:

We want to remind applicants that while the position description details both minimum requirements and desired skills and experience, you do not need to have all the desired skills and experience to be considered for this role. AMS prioritizes the health and safety of our staff and interviewees, so initial interviews will likely take place virtually. AMS requires all employees to provide proof of full vaccination for COVID-19 to work on-site. If you are hired, you will be asked to provide this proof.
